Electrical Certificate of
Compliance, explained.

An electrical Certificate of Compliance — usually called a COC — is a legal document confirming that the electrical installation at a property meets South Africa's wiring safety standard, SANS 10142. It must be issued by a registered electrician after a thorough inspection of the property's electrical work.

In South Africa, a valid COC is required by law before a property can be transferred to a new owner. Conveyancing attorneys will not finalise a sale without one. The certificate is valid for two years, as long as no electrical work or alterations have been done since it was issued — which is why a fresh inspection is usually needed at the point of sale.

You also need a new COC after any significant electrical work, such as a DB board upgrade, a solar installation, or a renovation that changes the wiring. If you're adding solar, the COC confirms the installation was done safely and to standard.
